Natural occurrences such as hurricanes, windstorms, insect outbreaks, wildfires, prolonged drought, or other disturbance events can cause tree damage or death. Salvaging involves the removal of dead, dying, or degraded trees to maintain forest
health, improve forest aesthetics, and to recover timber value that would otherwise be lost. Salvaging operations are time sensitive, and the wood needs to be harvested before it is further degraded due to wood-rot fungi, stain, or wood boring insects.
