Forest Research

“We are committed to ongoing scientific research and partnerships.”

Every year, we conduct forest inventories in 1000 hectares (2471 acres) of the Chiquibul Forest Reserve. Up until today, at least 12,000 hectares of the 60,000 has been inventoried. These compartments were worked under a 25-year cutting cycle using strict Reduced Impact Logging (RIL) protocols. Our research has shown that there is an estimated increment growth of about 1.5 cm per year for mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla) species.

International students often collaborate with Bulridge on forestry and wildlife research within the Chiquibul Forest Reserve. Some research topics include increment growth, tree liberation from lianas, scarlet macaw nesting and behavior, monitoring of wildcats and their prey, etc.
