Lianas are woody climbing plants that can harm commercial timber trees as they compete for light and soil resources (Mills, et al. 2019). Cutting lianas on trees can promote faster growth, lower mortality rates, and reduce the number of defective tree stems.
Liana liberation in the Chiquibul Forest Reserve has a low cost of about $0.11 per tree providing substantial gains in timber volume increments (Mills, et al. 2019). According to research, liberated forests will yield more roundwood than comparable trees in unliberated forests.
